In December 2005, James Moskito, a professional diver, and volunteer, worked for five hours to free a whale that had gotten trapped off the coast of San Francisco, California.
The whale was tangled up in ropes that were attached to a 3,000-pound anchor. During the rescue, Moskito recalled that the whale remained cooperative even though some of the ropes and cut into the whale’s flesh. Once the whale was freed, it stayed with the divers and even rubbed on them!
The whale even gave Moskito a personal thank you. Moskito said he has never done something so gratifying.
