Judy Obregon was driving down the street one day when she noticed a dead opossum lying in the road…until it lifted its head and looked at her.
Most people consider opossums pests and think they should be gotten rid of. They are the only marsupial to live on the North American continent. Few people are taking measures to ensure that these animals remain safe.
She got out of her car and provided help to the animal.
Jusy is the founder of The Abandoned Ones “Saving Animals in Danger.” While she had plenty of experience rescuing dogs, this would be her first opossum.
She helped move the opossum away from the busy road and covered it with a t-shirt for warmth.
She then called The DFW Wildlife Coalition, who provided her with a list of numbers of nearby rehabilitation facilities that she could bring the injured animal to.
While waiting for one of them to show up, she ran a block to her mother-in-law’s house to get a box.
After the vet examined her, he thought the opossum had likely been shot with a BB gun. The mother opossum, in fact, had babies in her pouch that were still in the early stages of development.
Not only did Judy save the mother, but also the babies wouldn’t have survived without her assistance.
