One of the most horrible places for animals is the circus. Animals are routinely tortured and abused; their children are taken away from them, and their lives are spent living in servitude to the same people who tortured their parents. They commonly have health problems. The lives of performing elephants, in particular, are used to highlight this travesty occurring all over the world.
Groups all over the world have advocated ending this practice by boycotting any industry that does this. Many other groups go a step further and actually try and rescue the animals that are in these circuses now.
These pictures were taken when these two circus elephants were released into the protection of a sanctuary. The look of happiness on these beautiful creatures is unmistakable.
Both of them have major health problems which stem from not being cared for properly. The elephants were chained up, unable to sleep or even lay down in some cases.
Mia and Sita were so happy when they got to take their first baths and naps in what was probably a very long time.
Their lives are about to get much better, but we should remember that there are many more elephants who are living the kinds of lives that these two escaped from.
